Gondre is a wild vegetable that’s full of nutrients. Gondrebap is basically steamed rice with gondre. It is very famous ins Jeongseon and Taebaek area as gondres in these areas are very soft and crispy.
Ongsimi (small dumpling) is a native food of Gangwon Province. It is made with grinded potato mixed with starch flour to make into small looking dumplings. They are usually then boiled in anchovy broth. It is said that Gangwon-do province’s Ongsimi is the best as the potatos there are packed with flavours and it’s best consumed during winter.
Buckwheat is huge in Gangwon-do as it’s known to be healthy with high level of proteins, vitamin B1 and B2 that helps with blood pressure. Kotdeungchigi Guksu is one of the many food dishes that uses buckwheat noodles. Kotdeungchigi means “hit the nose” in Korean because this noodle may slap your nose when you eat it because its thick and resilient texture.
A great place where you can get them all is in Jeongseon 5-Day Arirang Market which opens on 2nd, 7th, 12th,17th, 22nd, and 27th of every month. Be sure to walk down the Eatery Alley (Meokja-golmok). They have tons of variety of food and delicious local dishes there for you to experience and enjoy. A few other must try would be Buckwheat Pancake and Sorghum Pancake.
