‘Multidisciplinary’ is almost not a strong enough word to describe this concept store on Van Woustraat in Amsterdam’s De Pijp neighbourhood. A lunch café, gallery and shop for covetable design objects in one, Hutspot makes the visitor waver between wanting to shop, wondering whether to get another cappuccino and appreciating the changing exhibitions of photographs and paintings. The hotel by the highly acclaimed Dutch design company Droog is not your typical double-rooms-and-breakfast-buffet affair. For starters, there is only one hotel room… but that shouldn’t deter daytime visitors that are after high-end design and a refreshing experience. Spread over 700 square metres in a 17th-century building in Amsterdam’s Staalstraat, Hôtel Droog offers a café, a spa, a concept store and even a ‘fairytale garden’, plus, of course, plenty of the design collective’s quirky wares and high-end designs. It’s hard to believe, but hidden away right in the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam’s tourist mecca, the Museum Quarter, lies a green oasis of peace. The Tuinhuis, a café in the garden of the Rijksmuseum, is a great place to while away the time and enjoy a hot drink, looking at the sculptures and a fountain in the garden, tulips in spring and verdancy in summer.
Cottoncake is the perfect place for post-market refreshments after a visit to De Pijp’s famous Albert Cuyp Market. Organic coffee, healthy smoothies, sandwiches, homemade cake and fresh salads are on the menu, which also includes plenty of vegetarian, vegan, sugar-free and gluten-free options. And yes, there’s art, too: works by changing artists adorn the walls, and they’re all for sale. WEBSITE
Friday Next combines high-end interior design, homewares, fashion and a café for those that want to mull over their sofa purchase with a cup of coffee or, alternatively, check out the pieces by local artists who showcase their work in changing exhibitions. WEBSITE
