#1 SHIRAKAWA-GO, GIFU
Located in the remote mountains between Gifu and Toyama, experience heavy snowfall as you bundle up in traditional gassho-style houses! Do note that snow falls from around late December until early March and the Shirayumi Ski Resort usually opens for business around that time. #2 OTARU, HOKKAIDO
A beautiful little port town with a big heart. This romantic city is filled with exotic history.
Flourished with herring fishing which was once the center of the economy of Hokkaido. There are many historical buildings such as stone-made western style architecture to old Japanese style architecture that can be found in Otaru. #3 YUNISHIGAWA KAMAKURA FESTIVAL, TOCHIGI
This popular onsen town comes even more alive from January to March, when snow huts and candlelight lights up everywhere you look during the festival! During the day, enjoy sleighing or a barbeque in the snow huts (by appointment only), in the evening, stroll along rows of candle lit small huts by the river. More info here.
#4 MOUNT ASO, KUMAMOTO
Despite its moniker of “Land of Fire”, the mountain is a serene getaway for unbeatable views, volcanic hot springs and snowfall. In the center of it all lies Mt. Aso, a collapsed caldera and the most active volcanic area in Japan. While its daily activity is usually limited to smoke and occasional ash, travel restrictions around the central peak are often in place and should be checked ahead of your visit. #5 MOUNT ZAO, YAMAGATA & MIYAGI
Get lost in the mystery and thrills Zao has to offer. The frost covered trees, called "Juhyo," are labeled the "Snow Monsters." Zao is known throughout the world as a land where, among the many such places in Japan, especially large and beautiful juyho can be viewed. The annual "Zao Juhyo Festival" is a must-see event.
