5 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE DONATING TO NEPAL

Millions are homeless after a devastating earthquake happened on 25 April in Nepal. Buildings and roads were destroyed and people are afraid to stay indoor due to the afterquake. However, before rushing to donate to Nepal, it’s best to do some research as there are a few things you should know:

#1 Don’t donate physical items

Unless the charity states that they accept physical items and have the resources to fly the goods to Nepal, it just doesn’t make sense because we are all the way in Malaysia. It’s better to raise money when you are far away from the disaster areas.

#2 Be aware of donation scams

Most of us are kind enough to spare a few bucks to the cause but beware, because scammers are happy to take advantage of your generosity. Always check the organisations to see if they are legit before clicking the donate button online or giving cash to people asking on the streets.

#3 Go local

Let’s unite as a country to help other country in need. Plus, it’s easier as we can donate in our own currency so you know exactly how much you can afford to donate. Here are two legitimate Malaysian organisations that are helping Nepal:

  1. Nepal Relief Fund by MERCY Malaysia
  2. Nepal Earthquake Children’s Appeal by UNICEF Malaysia

#4 Don’t forget the animals

Animals are affected too. Animal lovers can help protect the scores of pets and farm animals displaced or injured by the disaster through Animal Nepal organisation.

#5 Needs don’t go away when the headlines disappear

Recovery from disaster like this will take years. The media will soon stop reporting about this story and you’ll think it’s over, but it’s not. Do consider to donate again in a few months time, and beyond, to help the organisations who stay there long after the camera leave.
