Chodang Dubu Village, just south of Gyeongpo Beach, is one place you wouldn’t want to miss when visiting Gangneung. It’s famous for the production of tofu as they use the salt water from the East Sea in the congealing process that result in a soft and light tofu.
Chodang Dubu Village is named after a famous person that lived there, Chodang Heo Yeop. Heo Yeop was a minister in Samcheok and he made tofu with sea water of Gangneung, which was loved and complimented by the public.
When you are there, we highly recommend trying these few dishes. The most typical would be sundubu-jeongsik – it’s soft tofu served with a bit of soy sauce, this allows the eater to taste the real flavour of Chodang’s tofu. You should also try a local specialty such as dubu-jeongol (hot pot tofu) and jjamppong sundubu (spicy seafood dish with soft tofu).
