Why do dark spots appear on the skin?
Over-exposure to UV radiation, as well as the passing years, can disrupt the process responsible for natural skin colouration, known as melanogenesis. This complex cellular process is stimulated by light: the more the skin is exposed to the sun, the more melanocytes produce melanin to protect it (causing the skin to tan). However, with age, the production of melanocytes can become disorganized and some keratinocytes end up containing too much melanin. This, combined with a slower rate of cell renewal, leads to the appearance of dark spots in certain areas.
