Flowboarding – or flowriding, as it is also generally known – is an alternative boardsport which gained popularity in the last 20 years incorporating elements of surfing, bodyboarding, skateboarding, skimboarding and wakeboarding.
Flowboarders ride on artificial waves comprising of a three-inch layer of water pumped at high pressure. The water flows up and over surfaces engineered to replicate the shape of ocean waves. These “sheet waves”, as they are known, are stationary and do not move forward as natural waves do. Flowboarders garner their speed from the energy of the water flowing at them, rendering them the ability to perform basic to sophisticated turns and tricks within a relatively small area.
Despite being a relative newcomer to the sport, Malaysia is already making waves in international flowboarding circuits, thanks to local competitors who are putting the country on the world flowboarding map. Now, these enthusiasts may ride on Sunway Lagoon’s waves and tear it up together.
