China Airlines, the national carrier of Taiwan, has debuted its new uniform designs as part of the latest phase of the ambitious NexGen (Next Generation) Plan. Designed by Academy Award-nominated designer and eleven-time Golden Horse Award winner William Cheung, the new uniforms is expected to be seen worn by cabin crew and ground staff starting August 2015.
William Cheung, a Hong Kong based designer, is known for his vintage and nostalgic designing style. He has been widely admired for adding a modern touch to traditional Chinese clothing.
The cohesive element of the uniforms is the montage-like designs. For female crews, the uniform design is based on the 50’s style of traditional Chinese “Qipao” and incorporated the boldness of red to make the uniforms elegant yet eye-catching. For female cabin manager, the uniform has a black-and-white colour scheme while the chief purser has a blue-gold scheme to distinguish their statues from the others. All female uniforms have a carefully designed colour block on the upper half to make the figure look slimmer and taller.
While for the male crew, the colours are not as bold with a traditional formal suit wear featuring sapphire blue on the bottom half of the jacket. A hint of red on the notch is added to create an interesting focal point. The cabin manager uniform features a dark blue, black and gold scheme.
As for winter wears, female crew gets black coats with hints of sapphire blue on the pockets while the male crew version gets the hint of sapphire blue on the collar.
Cheung also designed both flat and high heels footwear for different working occasions. The new shoes are made with cold grey leather with hints of blue on the surface and at the sole.
Stylist Roger Cheng was hired to design new makeup look and hairstyles for the crews to complement the new uniforms.
The new uniforms are designed to make China Airlines staff look energetic and confident. It’s a slim-fit design without compromising comfort and ease of movement.
