Campari, Italy’s iconic red apéritif, and Imbibe Magazine have allied once again for the seventh year to showcase Negroni Week 2019 – a celebration of the iconic and historic Negroni cocktail. Created by Imbibe, Negroni Week is an international charity initiative that will take place from the 24th to the 30th of June 2019 in bars, restaurants and retailers around the world with the common goal of raising money for charitable initiatives. And this year is even more special, as 2019 marks the 100‐year anniversary of the Negroni: #N100.
Joining other countries, Malaysia will also be taking part in the Negroni Week which will be hosted by the world-renowned French spirits group, Remy Cointreau. With the trend for classic and contemporary cocktails at an all‐time high, and the Negroni being one of the world’s most popular cocktails, this year’s Negroni Week is shaping up to be the best yet.
WHAT NEGRONI WEEK 2019 HAS TO OFFER
Started in Portland, Negroni Week was launched in 2013 with about 100 participating bars, and last year’s event welcomed the involvement nearly 10,000 venues in 87 countries, (a 29% increase in participation since 2017) to raise an impressive total of RM2,426,580 for charitable causes in 2018, contributing to a total of nearly RM8 million raised since the initiative began.
The popular Negroni Week bartender sessions will continue to take place across the globe in 2019, run by some of world’s best bartenders, who will be wearing distinctive N100 pins, including the ‘Red Hand’ bartenders featured in the global Campari Red Diaries campaign launched earlier this year. These sessions will showcase the classic Negroni alongside unique twists and variations, demonstrating the versatility of Campari and reinforcing it as a core ingredient of the Negroni.
During the time of the week in Malaysia, 39 bars and restaurants across the nation such as Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor Bahru and Sabah will also be participating in this cause and serving world‐class Negronis throughout the night.
N100 CELEBRATIONS
On 24th June, activities will commence in Florence, the birthplace of the Negroni, triggering a series of charity events due to take place around the world to honour Count Camillo Negroni, the man who inspired the cocktail. International bartenders will gather from around the world to prepare their interpretations and twists on The Negroni in Florence.
It was in the city of Florence, in Caffé Cassoni, that the first iteration of the Negroni was created 100 years ago for the renowned Count Camilo Negroni after he asked bartender Fosco Scarcelli to strengthen his favourite cocktail – the Americano – by replacing soda water with a splash of gin. Scarselli added an orange slice as garnish, rather than the usual lemon twist, and from this moment on, the Negroni was born.
CAMPARI IS THE RED HEART OF THE NEGRONI
Now a globally beloved contemporary classic, the Negroni cocktail has been voted as the second most popular cocktail in the world1 and is listed as the one of the main ingredients in the prestigious IBA Official Drink List2.
