The temple, a magnificent four-floor building with a gilded rooftop, is on the Barkhor in the centre of Lhasa’s old section. The Potala Palace is another fascinating attraction. Built in the 7th century AD by King Songtsen Gampo, the palace was rebuilt by the fifth Dalai Lama and again by the thirteenth, eventually becoming a winter palace with over 1,000 rooms. It is also home to many rare cultural artefacts including some gold hand-written Buddhist scriptures. Drepung Monastery, founded in 1416 to train each new young Dalai Lama, is another interesting site. At its height, the Monastery had over 10,000 monks.  ??????
