This project started last year, as there was a need to provide shelter for the homeless in the city. This “free hotel” is known as Anjung Singgah located in Jalan Segget.
It’s a temporary shelter established by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry and managed by the National Welfare Foundation Malaysia (NWF).
This is applicable to anyone with a Malaysian ID Card but not alcoholics and with diseases or addictions. You’ll be allowed to “check in” to the four storey centre and stay for up to two weeks. Besides that, you’ll also be receiving three free meals, basic toiletries including a towel, sarong, toothbrush with toothpaste and a bar of soap. You’re free to come and go but the doors closes from 11pm to 5am.
Most occupants so far are in their 40s including the city’s homeless and those who come to JB and Singapore in search of work. The centre could accommodate 95 people at a time with men and women on separate floors. There are several family rooms for mothers with little children, lockers for people to keep their items, and computers where occupants can work on their resumes to apply for jobs.
