The Gion district is one of Japan’s most popular tourist spots, famous for its well-preserved heritage roads with wooden teahouses and one of the best areas to spot geisha or maiko (apprentice geisha) walking on the picturesque streets. However, Gion now bans photos on private streets and introduces ¥10,000 fine for rule-breakers.
The reason for the ban is due to uncivilised tourists flocking around the area and even trespassing on private properties just to take photos of geisha and maiko. Some even go to the extent of grabbing these ladies for a photo with them, making many locals and those poor ladies uncomfortable with the situation. It truly destroys the atmosphere of Gion.
Thus, an association made up of Gion’s local residents and shop owners has forbid photography on private roads. Rumor has it that there might be video surveillance for tracking if they are not caught right away. The fine is said to be at 10,000 yen but there are no clear statement on how it will be enforced yet.
Main roads such as famous Hanami-koji, Shirakawa-dori, and Sennenzaka Slope leading to Yasaka Pagoda are some of the few streets that you can snap away.
No matter where you go, remember to be polite and respectful.
