Maya Bay, known for its lush greens, clear water, and a filming location of Hollywood blockbuster ‘The Beach’, is to be closed amid critical damage to corals due to tourist boom.
Reported by Star2, the national park officials states that they will be close between June and September this year ahead of the high season. Thailand’s tourism industry boomed and thanks to that, it has caused coral damage at Maya Bay to reach a critical level.
77% of the total 238.4 sq km of coral reefs in all of Thailand’s waters has been devastated, making it to an alarming increase from 30% a decade ago, said Thon Thamrongnawasawat, deputy dean of the Faculty of Fisheries at Kasetsart University in Bangkok.
This is a heads up to any of you who are interested to visit Maya Bay this year.
