MUD: The Story of Kuala Lumpur is the longest running theatrical show in Malaysia, having staged 1,500 shows and counting. The musical marks the first time a Malaysian performing arts company to hire cast members on a full time basis. The diverse, multi racial cast perfectly epitomises our 1Malaysia demographics, making it easily relatable to the local audience and interesting to an international audience.
This musical collaboration between Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Enfiniti Group, delivers a vibrant showcase of our capital’s rags-to-riches past and our forefathers’ humble beginnings. Visitors to KL are given an eye-opening opportunity to witness the history and culture of our city and serves as a reminder to our locals of who we are as a society. MUD is sure to make KL-ites proud of their state as it does an excellent job of revealing the story of Kuala Lumpur in a way that will tug at your heartstrings with energetic musical numbers and cheeky, 'only- in-Malaysia' one liners.
The journey of bringing MUD to the stage began with extensive historical, visual and data research on Kuala Lumpur and brought to life by a team of designers who drew inspiration from various artists and artistic styles of Malaysia. This ranged from hand drawn batik to Islamic architecture which are reflected throughout the show from the costumes to soundscape and even the LED backdrop. The music composition drew from traditional influences of the early 1990s era as the creative team delved into Indian percussive elements, Chinese string instruments and Malay melodies.
