Yayasan Guan Yin is organising a charity singing event, “Nepal We Are With You - Singing and Giving” for victims of the recent devastating earthquake in Nepal. The event, featuring Datuk Tan Swee Lai, Secretary General of Yayasan Guan Yin, Mr Chow Kam Leong, Head of Cultural Bureau of Yayasan Guan Yin and renowned local musician, together with a host of artistes, musicians and bands, will be presented in the form of street concerts at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur to raise funds for the earthquake victims. The public can participate in the fund raising efforts by donating generously towards the event. This meaningful event will be graced by the Minister of Federal Territories, YB Datuk Seri Utama Tengku Adnan Bin Tengku Mansor and his Deputy Minister, YB Senator Dato’ Dr. Loga Bala Mohan.
Datuk Tan Swee Lai said so far more than 8,600 people were killed and over 20,000 more were injured in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 25 April 2015 and subsequently another 7.3 magnitude earthquake on 12 May 2015 which hit Nepal.
All proceeds from the event will be handed over to the Shechen Monastery and Karuna-Shechen in Nepal. The monastery was founded by H.H Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and its present abbot is Rabjam Rinpoche. Karuna-Shechen was jointly founded by Rabjam Rinpoche and Matthieu Ricard. Soon after the earthquake, the two institutions mobilised some 500 personnel to actively take part in relief efforts, including resettlement and rescue of victims, delivery of food and medical supplies to areas affected by the earthquake. These disaster relief personnel are well trained. The funds raised by the Singing and Giving performance will be channelled to Sechen Monastery and Karuna-Shechen for distribution to areas and people hit by the earthquakes to help them rebuild lives and homes.
Having gained a clear and informed picture of the local earthquake situation in Nepal and the relief efforts by Shechen Monastery and Karuna-Shechen, Datuk Tan Swee Lai decided to rally the support of Malaysia’s local music community to organise the Singing and Giving charity performance. Information about the event has been publicised to the public by Yayasan Guan Yin through Facebook, electronic and print media, as well as social media platforms.
