An Austrian architect Andreas Strauss first introduced the idea of drainpipe rooms in Ottensheim, Austria with only three standard sewer pipes with an inner diameter of 2m and a length of 2.6m. Naming it the DasParkHotel, it provides the most basic hospitality where it is you-pay-what-you-wish system. It was also further humanised by painting illustration into the inner walls of the room by an Austrian artist Thomas Latzel Ochoa.
This trend is slowly catching on to other parts of the world such as DasParkHotel BernePark in Germany, TuboHotel in Mexico, Prahran Hotel in Australia and an unknown pipe hotel located in a village in Henan Province in China.
Interestingly, this concrete cylinder hotel trend caught up in Malaysia too! You can find them in two different locations – a relaxing sea view room at Tubotel in Langkawi Geopark or take a breath of the forest surroundings at Time Capsule Retreat in Sungai Lembing Pahang.
What do you think? Would you pay to stay a night in these concrete pipes?
