Samgyetang is a famous traditional Korean dish that’s made with chicken, glutinous rice, and ginseng, the main ingredient that makes this soup really good for health. It is said that Koreans usually have Samgyetang during the hottest period in the Summer. I thought it was awfully weird to have a bowl of hot soup ginseng soup on a hot day, thus I asked and my guide replied stating that having Samgyetang during Summer can help with detoxification and blood circulation as ginseng heats up your body and make you sweat all the toxins out. Interesting isn’t it?
We had one in Gangneung city at Baekje Samgyetang, a restaurant that also has a brand in Myeongdong, Seoul. This restaurant name is really popular in South Korea as they have been featured multiple television programs, magazines and other media outlets. Plus, their pricing are pretty reasonable for a pot of Samgyetang served with a bunch of other side dishes.
Do give this herbal soup a try when you visit South Korea, it’s really yummy!
