The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® (CB&TL) continues to strengthen its support towards the Malaysian Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Association (PSLEM) by presenting a donation of RM40,000 in conjunction with the Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Charity Dinner recently.
The charity effort, part of CB&TL’s Caring Cup initiative, were raised from the sales of an exclusive blend of lemon myrtle, malva flower and tea blossoms with raspberry flavouring. Named Blue Tiger Tea, the limited edition blend was specially handcrafted by CB&TL’s resident Tea Master David de Candia. Inspired by his daughter’s experience with lupus and the various challenges faced by his family and others, de Candia also developed a children’s storybook entitled Master Davey and the Magic Tea House: Legend of the Blue Tiger which was sold at CB&TL outlets together with Blue Tiger Tea bookmarks and later, Christmas gift tags towards end 2014.
Founded in 1994, the Malaysian Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Association was set up by patients and doctors to promote research, awareness and education as well as serving the needs of the people with lupus and their families.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, incurable auto-immune disease where the body produces large amounts of anti-bodies which react against the patient’s own tissues, and it primarily affects women. In Malaysia, an estimated 10,000 individuals have been diagnosed with SLE over the past 30 years but the Association believes the actual number to be much higher, with many individuals remaining undiagnosed. The Association relies on public donations and corporate support, such as CB&TL’s Blue Tiger Tea initiative, to carry out its many activities.
