Gangol Han-gwa Village is located in Gangneung, Gangwon Province where it preserves and educates about the traditional Korean cookies, or better known as Hangwa. Apparently, Galgol Han-gwa are all still produced in a traditional way, basically handmade, no mass productions and machineries.
There are many types of Han-gwa, such as Yakgwa (honey cookies), Maejakgwa (fried ribbon cookies), Omijapyeon (jelly), Dasik (tea confectionery), Jatbaksan (pine nut cookies), etc. They are all quite different from one another. If you have a tour guide, they will usually do the job of showing, translating and explaining to you all the different types of han-gwa displayed in this place after watching the video about the history and how-to of han-gwa in the video room.
The type of han-gwa that we tasted is called Gangjeong. These sweet hallow rice snacks are made with glutinous rice, cheongju (rice wine), honey, and water. Double-fried, coated with honey and rice puffs.
We only got to watch the final few processes where they fry and coat the han-gwa. Then, we get to taste them and had the opportunity to decorate our own han-gwa with various nuts, seeds, or fruit (red dates).
