Iceland is renowned for its otherworldly illuminations, the Northern Lights being one remarkable example. This particular phenomenon, also known as the Aurora Borealis, can be experienced in Iceland during the winter time, especially on those clear, crisp nights, where they appear in a variety of colours and intensity, either twirling gently in shades of milky green, or occasionally blazing in a wild and multi-coloured dance across the night sky.
At 09:00, meet your tour guide, who will show the group the highlights of Iceland’s exciting capital. Then we head out to the Reykjanes Peninsula with its hot springs, mountains, moon-like landscape, bird cliffs, lighthouses and fishing villages. In the afternoon, we bathe in the Blue Lagoon.
Drive along the south coast to arrive in the village of Hella, where we stay for two nights at Stracta Hotel.
We hear about the Northern Lights from our tour guide in the evening. So, naturally, you are outside in a suitable area for the Aurora hunt when darkness falls.
NOTE: The Northern Lights are visible in the northern sky from September through April when the sky is clear and free of clouds. The tour is dependent on weather and therefore sightings are not guaranteed. Like many natural wonders. It is an ephemeral spectacle - the Northern Lights may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone. Northern Lights are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layer, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else makes you comfortable while you await this truly outstanding event.
Today we travel along the south coast and reach the area beneath the Eyjafjallajökull volcano and glacier. Our first stop is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and we visit the Skógar folk museum of early Modern Iceland with its turf houses. At noon, we see the Skógarfoss waterfall.
You can book and pay for an optional glacier walk on the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue when booking the tour here on site or by sending us an email. The price per person is 110 EUR (subject to availability). The duration of the tour is 3 hours, the time on the ice is 1-1,5 hours.
Suppose you book a trip without the glacier hike. In that case, the tour continues further south, where you walk on the famous Black Lava Beach at Reynisfjara and observe the Cap of Dyrhólaey and the Reynisdrangar Sea Cliffs before visiting the charming village of Vík.
In the evening there is another presentation about the Northern Lights. If the night is clear, you might see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens in dramatic shapes, colours, patterns and sizes.
Optional glacier hike: Duration of this activity is approximately 3 hours in total, about 90 minutes on the ice and about 30-40 min walk (one-way) from the car park to the glacier edge itself. The minimum age for the glacier hike is 10 years. You need to bring warm clothing, rain gear and hiking boots. The glacier hike can be booked through email with GJ Travel before the tour starts.
In the morning learn about the Icelandic horse, its unique qualities and history and visit a geothermal greenhouse. Then travel the Golden Circle route. See steam rising from the Geysir geothermal fields as you arrive.
There is a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. Strokkur, 'the Churn', erupts at 5-10 minutes intervals. Continue on to Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvita River and attracts tourists and travellers in summer and winter.
Head inland to Þingvellir National Park ancient Viking Parliament and UNESCO World Heritage Site, before returning to Reykjavik for your last night.
An optional Northern Lights evening cruise can be booked for this day if the weather conditions are good.
After breakfast, end of our services. Hotel check out time 1000am.
Your arrangements conclude today with a individual transfer by Flybus shuttle to Keflavik airport.
